My final project was based around the word 'interpretation' and presented through conceptual photography. I decided to begin a new project instead of continuing with my first project on futurism as I really enjoyed looking at concept photography while looking researching photographers for my page on this subject and had been inspired by the creative thinking I had seen. Although I feel this project still links with my previous projects by having the idea of obfuscation as an underlying theme.
My initial idea was to take photos based on sets of text such as quotes, idioms, phrases, poem extracts or even an A-Z of photos. I was swayed toward taking photos based on the poem 'Mariana' by Alfred Tennyson as I had analysed in another class so was aware of the multiple ways it could be interpreted. The various ways to interpret the poem is encouraged by the range of descriptive language which litters the text evoking imagery. |
Despite feeling that this concept would be able to challenge interpretations I decided to use one word per image to achieve a cleaner look which I was aiming for.Another Idea I had considered was editing my photos to create photo manipulations in order to convey my ideas but I realised that I wouldn't have enough time to plan and execute this. Furthermore I wanted my final photos to be more realistic, I felt that by using everyday items to convey my thoughts people may be encouraged to rethink the way they perceive things.
I was glad that I had the opportunity to experiment with the scanner during this project. Despite displaying my digital images I had unexpectedly liked the out come of these images as well as some from the dark room so much so that a consideration had been made to blend the two to present as my final piece.
I believe my final images were as simple as I had intended them to be,contrary to me aiming to create minimal photos I feel my ideas are still accurately presented. I feel that through my process of switching around my titles multiple times I was able to further show how ideas can be visualised differently. |
I have not seen how any of the photographers that had inspired me had physically displayed their work so tried to link the presentation to the concept behind my project. I had thought about concealing the titles of my images and having them revealed after the viewer had had time to analyse the photo to see if we had the same thoughts. I had also thought about the type face for each title- I was unsure whether to keep everything uniform and simple as the photos in the set where or whether to have the font correlate to the meaning of the word as the photo did. As I had constantly rotated my titles it was suggested that I allowed the audience to note what title they thought best suited the image - I felt this was a great idea as it fell in line with my aim of seeing the many ways a photo could be interpreted while also encouraging the audience to further interact with the image.
Overall I'm happy with my outcome but to improve this project next time I would allow myself a longer period to take pictures and try to create a better 'studio space' in order to cut out some of my editing process and allow myself to think through the framing of my shots better than I feel I had.
